Once the procedure is done all you have to do is follow some simple routine for care and give your gums some time to heal. Here are some of the care tips that you can followed to ensure a speedy recovery but also safeguard one’s dental health.
The secret to faster healing is leaving the area undisturbed and giving it some time to heal. This may mean that you will live on fluids and only take foods that require minimal chewing for a day or two, as vigorous chewing will disturb the area where the dental implants are placed. You also have to refrain from spitting even when you get the urge to, as this can restart some bleeding or cause infection that will only derail the healing process.
It is safe to start a mouth cleaning routine about 24 hours after surgery. Brushing and regular oral hygiene should, however, be limited to the normal teeth and be kept as far as possible from the area where dental implants are placed. For the dental implants, use some warm water and salt solution to flush out any food debris that may be left on this area. Use about a half a teaspoon of salt for every cup of warm water and use this solution to rinse your mouth about three times in a day or after every meal.
Normally minimal discomfort is expected after surgery. This can be managed using some Tylenol or ibuprofen. In case of intense pain, your doctor will prescribe some stronger painkillers that will greatly reduce your pain but may leave you groggy for some few hours. This means that you will not be in a position to drive and perform any other functions that require you to be alert and you may need someone to take care of you for a few hours after surgery. The pain is expected to reduce with time, with every day after surgery being a lot better than the previous one.
As mentioned above, a good diet after dental implants will generally consist of fluids and soft foods. This is a perfect time to enjoy all your favorite fluids. If you need something to fill you up and have to take some solids, ensure that the foods are soft and chew away from the site where the dental implants are placed. Your fluids and foods of choice should also be warm not too hot, and not freezing cold. Best to have them room temperature or slightly warm.
Some swelling after surgery is normally expected. The degree of swelling will depend on the extent of surgery and the dental implants placed. While normally the swelling will go down on its own, an icepack placed on the cheeks right above the area with the dental implants can offer quite a relief and considerably reduce the swelling in less than 24 hours after surgery.
